A lovely hummingbird is carved into the back of the piece allowing it to shine through the stone when held up to the light. This Van Gogh Gemstone was specifically chosen as it’s colors remind me of flowering garden. A light blue base of glass was used so the hummingbird appears blue. The blue also shows through the multiple layers of dichroic glass that have wonderful patterns of greens, yellows and oranges.

What is dichroic glass? Dichroic glass is a color shifting glass made with multiple micro-layers of metal oxides deposited on the glass.
It is made by heating high quality art glass in a vacuum chamber, having a variety of metals vaporized by a laser in the chamber and then having those oxides fuse onto the glass in layers so thin that light can still pass through.
Each Van Gogh Gemstone can contain 3, 4, 5 or even more layers of dichroic glass as well as a base glass which can be transparent or opaque.
Each one is carefully made and often shaped and fired multiple times until the final desired result has been reached. Each is truly artist made.
